NOAA NCEI/CIRES Coastal DEM Workshop

This two-hour workshop follows an end-to-end coastal DEM workflow using the Continuous-DEMs open-source tools in a hosted JupyterHub environment.

2:00–2:15 p.m. β€” Welcome and getting started
Introductions, JupyterHub setup, and confirmation that the workshop tools and data are ready.

2:15–2:30 p.m. β€” Build the Newport DEM
Define the Newport study area, start with a reusable national coastal data recipe, find local topobathymetric lidar in NOAA Digital Coast DAV, and launch the DEM build.

2:30–2:50 p.m. β€” Inside the workflow
Follow the Newport build as it discovers and prepares source data, standardizes reference systems, prioritizes measurements, interpolates across multiple scales, and writes the final DEM.

2:50–3:00 p.m. β€” Break / Newport build catch-up
Short break while the Newport workflow finishes if needed.

3:00–3:20 p.m. β€” Explore the Newport DEM
View the hillshade and spatial metadata in a desktop GIS, then trace a location in the finished surface back to its supporting source data.

3:20–3:30 p.m. β€” Same recipe, new region
Move to Sarasota, Florida, identify locally appropriate topobathymetric lidar, change the local pieces of the Newport recipe, and launch the Sarasota DEM build.

3:30–3:50 p.m. β€” Evaluate the DEMs with IVERT
Introduce independent DEM evaluation with IVERT, evaluate Newport while the Sarasota build continues, then return to Sarasota and evaluate it with independent observations if the build has completed.

3:50–4:00 p.m. β€” Wrap-up and questions
Review the reusable workflow, community resources, and how participants can apply the approach to their own coastal study areas.
